What are the Various Types of Computers?
Computers can be classified on the several basis. They can be classified
I) on the basis of Electronic used
a) Analog Computers
b) Digital Computers
c) Hybrid Computers.
II) On the basis of purpose of use
a) Special Purpose Computers
b) General Purpose Computers
III) on the basis of size
a) Micro computers
b) Desktop computers
c) Mini computers
d) Mainframe computers
e) Super computers
a)Analog computers : Analog computers operate on mathematical variables in the form of physical quantities that are continuously varying. For example temperature, pressure, voltages, etc. it measures rather than counting. The disadvantages of analog computers are that they are not versatile and they are not very accurate.
b) Digital Computers: We are living in a digital world. Everywhere you will find digital gadgets such as computers, camera, phones, video games. Even household appliances are digital now. In digital computer works using binary digits like 0’s and 1’s. These are also called binary numbers. All calculations are done using this binary digits. These calculations are more accurate comparing to analog computers.
c) Hybrid Computers: This computers can contains analog and digital features. It means some of the calculations done in analog manner and some are done using digital manner.
a) Special Purpose Computers : These are used for a specific purpose means these can perform a
single or limited tasks. These are used in weather forecasting and scientific research.
b) General Purpose Computers: these can perform multiple tasks means these are used for playing games , communations, documents preparations etc. personnel computers and laptop computers are the examples for this category.
a) Micro computers: these are small size computers. These can perform limited tasks. This group includes Personnel Digital assistance (PDA), Laptop Computers, Digital Watches etc. these are used by business salesmen’s, traveling persons etc.
b) Desktop computers : these are full sized computers. These are designed to sit on a desk, so these are called desktop computers. These are heavy in size comparing to micro computers. This computers very fast and storage capacity is very high comparing to micro computers.
c) Mini computers : Comparing to desktop computers these are very high speed and 50 to 100 persons can work at a time using multi terminals. These are using in government offices, hospitals, and small organizations. These are very high speed comparing to desktop computers.
d) Mainframe computers: these are big size computers can perform more than 100 users at a time. Comparing to mini computers these are very fast calculations. These are used in very big organizations.
e) Super computers : these are fastest computers comparing to all computers. this can be used for a specific purpose like weather forecasting, scientific research etc..
